Purolator calls on community residents to support Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank and Spanish Food Bank through Purolator Tackle Hunger Red Bag doorstep food drive

Purolator employees run food drives across Canada to help address food insecurity in their communities

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont., Sept. 19, 2023 — Purolator Tackle Hunger® is launching its third Elliot Lake-area Red Bag doorstep food drive, to rally the community to help donate 1,500 red bags of food to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank and the Spanish Food Bank. Purolator and food bank volunteers will drop off red bags throughout the Esten Drive North and South subdivisions of Elliot Lake and the majority of residential streets in Spanish on Sept. 21. Residents can fill their bags with non-perishable items and leave on their doorsteps before 9 a.m. on Sept. 30. Purolator volunteers will then pick up the bags, filled with food, and deliver them to the food banks.

The Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank and the Spanish Food Bank most-needed items include:
  • Canned or powdered milk
  • Canned vegetables and fruits
  • Fruit juices
  • High-protein foods
  • Infant foods and baby formula
  • Packaged pasta
  • Pasta sauce
  • Rice
  • Whole-grain cereals

The Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank provides temporary food relief to people who are struggling with hunger in Elliot Lake – over 25 per cent of whom are children. The organization’s goal is to provide its clients with a three-day supply of food, once per month. Since 2021, the organization has seen an increase in their client list year over year.

This is the third year of the Elliot Lake Purolator Tackle Hunger Red Bag campaign, raising over 13,000 pounds of food for local food banks to date. The upcoming Elliot Lake and Spanish food drive is part of Purolator’s first-ever National Purolator Tackle Hunger Red Bag campaign. From Sept. 16-30, Purolator employees are running community red bag food drives at numerous locations across the country. Over the past 20 years, Purolator Tackle Hunger has delivered more than 20 million pounds of food for Canadian food banks and has set a goal to raise over two million pounds in 2023.

Those who do not receive a red bag can donate at www.elliotlakefoodbank.com/donate.

If residents who received bags on doorsteps miss the pick-up deadline in Elliot Lake, donations can be dropped off at the Fire Hall on Hillside North. If the pick-up deadline in Spanish is missed, residents can drop off donations at the Royal Canadian Legion, at 5 Brennan Harbour Road.

Supporting Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank and Spanish Food Bank

On Saturday, September 23rd., Purolator Couriers and Local Volunteers, dropped off Purolator Red Bags in the “New Sub”, the south side of Elliot Lake and throughout the community of Spanish.

The bags were dropped off and then picked up the following Saturday, September 30th.
This project is a major fundraising event in our communities. All the food banks have experienced an increase in clients and in operating costs this year. The Purolator Red Bag Campaign ensures that as we head into the fall season, our shelves are well stocked. Elliot Lake has received over $22,000.00 in food value and we will post the final total in a few weeks, as we continue to have bags dropped off. If you still have a bag, it can be dropped off at the Elliot Lake Fire Department.

We are blessed by the support and generosity of our residents. They volunteer and they donate. This was our third Red Bag Campaign and each year we have collected more food product. Purolator Red Food Bag Drive

2nd Annual Purolator Tackle Hunger
Red Bag Campaign October 22nd to support the
Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank Inc

On Saturday, October 22nd., Team Purolator and our Volunteer Team from Elliot Lake, collected the Red Bags that had been distributed the weekend before. The Teams collected a terrific amount of food products.
Approximately 7,600 lbs., or over 3.8 tons of food products, with a value of approximately $18,240.00
Considering the financial stress that our residents are experiencing, this is an amazing effort of support for our food bank. We anticipate more red bags being dropped off, as there was a discrepancy in the time to put the bags out.

It was a bittersweet day. Unfortunately, the person who initiated this tremendous fundraiser, passed away in September. Mr. Bruce Panagapko, started this event by simply asking a Purolator Driver, if the Purolator Tackle Hunger Program ever donated to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank.  This simple question has started what we hope will become an annual event.

On behalf of the Board and our Clients, sincerest Thanks to our community for the kindness and generosity extended our organization. God Bless you.

Last night Liz and her Team, Heidi Jensen, Abby Pulvermacher, Brooke Talbot, Alison De Penotiere, packed 100 Hamper Boxes. They also ensured the shelves were restocked for the next day. These great Ladies did this work in 32 degrees of heat, in the building. They did this service after their regular work day. We are blessed in our Community to have this type of support for helping those less fortunate in our City. Sincerest Thanks from the Board of Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank.

Purolator Red bag program

On Saturday, December 11th, despite very inclement weather, The Purolator Team, supported by Local Volunteers, collected the Purolator Red Bags. The Team collected an amazing 6,000 pounds or 3 tonnes of food product. The cash value of this collection is approximately $12,000.00.

As this was the first time that Purolator has hosted this  in our community we are amazed at the generosity of our city. The event started because one of our resident’s, Bruce Panagapko, asked the Purolator driver, if they supported our local food bank. That simple ask resulted in a follow up in the Sudbury Office and then to the Head Office. The Food Bank was contacted and advised of the Red Bag program and how Purolator would like to conduct the program in Elliot Lake. The final step was an amazing response from our Community.
Team Purolator:
  • Ryan Duhaime – Operations Manager
  • Jenny-Lynn Pelland – Courier
  • Ross Clarke – Courier
  • Melissa Hodder – Courier
  • Jonathan Clarke – Volunteer
  • Brayden McInnis - Volunteer
  • Kiara McInnis - Volunteer
  • Aubrey Treling  - Volunteer
Food Bank Volunteers:
  • Bob Feltham
  • Ray Rochon
  • Paula & Carter Kendall
  • Sandra & Len Kutchaw
  • Linda Kilfoyl
  • Nadia & Nick Zanatta
When you realize that there were two fund raising events for the food bank, one week apart, the Food Bank received between cash and food product over $23.400.00 of support. This is a tremendous boost to our Food Bank.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend our sincerest Thank You and Gratitude to Bruce Panagapko, Purolator, the Fire Fighters and especially to the Residents of Elliot Lake.

We send our warmest wishes to All for a Happy and Healthy Christmas and New Year.
